Global Talent Visa Academia and Research Route

Academia and Research route of the UK Global Talent Visa empowers exceptional professionals in the field of science, engineering, humanities and medicine to build their future in the UK.

If you are ready to position yourself as a leader in your field, we help to turn your achievements into a path to settlement in the UK.

Eligibility for the Global Talent Visa in Academia and Research Fields

The UK Global Talent Visa in academic and research categories is designed for leading academics, researchers and scientists whose work contributes to the advancement of knowledge and innovation in the UK.

This route is open to individuals working in universities, research institutions and recognised research organisations.

You may be eligible under Global Talent Visa as academic or in research if you have any of the following:

(1) an eligible job offer as an academic or researcher

(2) an individual fellowship

(3) a research grant that is approved by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)

(4) you can apply by having your application peer reviewed

(5) an eligible prize.

  • As part of Stage 1, you usually need to apply for an endorsement to prove that you are a leader or potential leader in science, engineering, humanities or medicine. You do not need to apply for an endorsement if you’ve won an eligible prize, you can apply for visa directly.

Endorsement is granted by an approved endorsing body relevant to each field. These include The Royal Society (for science and medicine), The British Academy (for humanities and social sciences), The Royal Academy of Engineering (for engineering) and UK Research and Innovation - UKRI (for eligible research roles and funded projects).

  • Yes, researchers and academics on the UK Global Talent Visa can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and British citizenship, making this route ideal for long-term settlement in the UK. Depending on your endorsement route and role, and provided you meet continuous residence and ongoing activity requirements in your academic or research field, you may qualify for ILR after 3 or 5 years.

Time spent on the Global Talent Visa counts towards settlement, and once ILR is granted, if eligible you can apply for British citizenship. You will need to meet the standard residence and eligibility criteria.

  • The Global Talent Visa research and academic application is a two-stage process and typically takes several weeks to a few months, depending on the route used.

Endorsement applications take from 1 to 5 weeks. Where endorsement is linked to eligible research funding or roles, you may qualify for a faster route.

The visa application stage is generally processed within 3 weeks if applying from outside the UK or up to 8 weeks if applying from inside the UK.

  • It provides freedom to work without employer sponsorship, allowing academics to move between institutions, undertake research, collaborate internationally or take on additional roles without visa restrictions.

The Global Talent Visa academic route also offers a clear pathway to settlement with eligibility for Indefinite Leave to Remain after three or five years, followed by British citizenship. Researchers and academics can bring dependants, access the UK’s world-leading research environment and benefit from long-term flexibility to build and sustain an international academic career in the UK.

  • No, the Global Talent Visa route does not have an English language requirement at the visa application stage, regardless of whether you are endorsed through the academic or research route. However, an English language requirement will apply later if you choose to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or British citizenship.
